Picking Week 10 of NFL Action

With every team having played at least eight games so far this season, we’re officially at the halfway point of the 2014 NFL campaign. It’s been another unpredictable adventure full of upsets, disappointments and surprises. Week 10 is sure to offer more of the same. Still, I’ll do my best to pick all 13 games correctly.

I’d like to think my 90-43-1 record on the year is fairly trustworthy, but you assume the risk by following my picks.

Cleveland Browns (5-3) @ Cincinnati Bengals (5-2-1)

Pick: Browns

Boom! An upset to start the week. As great as the Bengals have been this season, their defense has been a wreck. While the Browns certainly aren’t an elite offense, Brian Hoyer has been playing well and the trio of running backs is a big threat. The Bengals will keep it tight, but will choke one away at home.

Kansas City Chiefs (5-3) @ Buffalo Bills (5-3)

Pick: Chiefs

There’s no denying that the Bills have been a pleasant surprise this season, but that doesn’t mean they can knock off a surging Chiefs squad. Both teams boast outstanding defenses and average offenses, but the Kansas City pass rush should force Kyle Orton into enough mistakes to come away with the W.

Miami Dolphins (5-3) @ Detroit Lions (6-2)

Pick: Dolphins

Boasting arguably the best defense in the NFL, the Dolphins come into this one riding an impressive three-game winning streak. They dismantled what many considered a high-powered San Diego offense last week, and shouldn’t have too much trouble keeping Matthew Stafford and Co. under wraps in Week 10.

Dallas Cowboys (6-3) @ Jacksonville Jaguars (1-8)

Brandon Weeden

Pick: Cowboys

Even with Brandon Weeden under center, the Cowboys should be able to cruise to victory against a pitiful Jaguars team. It’s great and all that they’ve kept themselves relatively competitive so far this season, but Blake Bortles makes too many mistakes to overcome an opportunistic Dallas defense.

San Francisco 49ers (4-4) @ New Orleans Saints (4-4)

San Francisco 49ers (4-4) @ New Orleans Saints (4-4)

Pick: Saints

At this moment, the 49ers aren’t playing great football. They’ve dropped two winnable games in a row, while the Saints have finally gotten back on track. Drew Brees has finally found his rhythm, and the Saints are undefeated at home this season. Mark it down as three losses in a row for San Francisco.

Tennessee Titans (2-6) @ Baltimore Ravens (5-4)

Pick: Ravens

If the Titans think they have a serious chance of winning this one, they’ve got another thing coming. They’ve been miserable all season long, and rookie Zach Mettenberger doesn’t stand a chance against a stout Baltimore defense. The Ravens will cruise to victory in this one.

Pittsburgh Steelers (6-3) @ New York Jets (1-8)

Pick: Steelers

You think 12 touchdowns in two weeks is impressive? How about 19 touchdowns in three weeks? Ben Roethlisberger is on fire right now, and the Jets have failed to slow the pass week in and week out. By the time the night is over, Roethlisberger will have tied the NFL record for touchdown passes in a game.

Atlanta Falcons (2-6) @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-7)

Pick: Falcons

Well at least one of these teams has to come away with a win. Both have been dreadful so far this season, but the Falcons have been slightly better and offer more overall talent. Considering how bad the Buccaneers have been at home, Atlanta should come away victorious.

Denver Broncos (6-2) @ Oakland Raiders (0-8)

Pick: Broncos

The Broncos desperately need a bounce-back win after getting embarrassed by the Patriots on Sunday, and what better team to get it against than the winless Raiders? Derek Carr and the Oakland offense haven’t been terrible, but they clearly can’t win. This will be a cake walk for Peyton Manning.

St. Louis Rams (3-5) @ Arizona Cardinals (7-1)

Pick: Cardinals

This Rams team is looking like the typical spoiler. However, the Cardinals aren’t the type of team to fall victim to spoilers. Carson Palmer is playing like an upper-tier quarterback and his receiving corps is shining bright. The defense won’t have any issues slowing down the St. Louis offense either.

New York Giants (3-5) @ Seattle Seahawks (5-3)

Marshawn Lynch

New York Giants (3-5) @ Seattle Seahawks (5-3)

Pick: Seahawks

The season started off well for the Giants, but three straight losses has them looking like a team on the ropes. The Seahawks have bounced back well from a few disappointing defeats. As long as Marshawn Lynch can get running while the defense corrals Eli Manning, Seattle will add to the Giants’ losing streak.

Chicago Bears (3-5) @ Green Bay Packers (5-3)

Aaron Rodgers

Pick: Packers

Rivalries always bring out the best in NFL teams, but that doesn’t mean the Bears stand much of a chance. They’re playing unorganized, unenthusiastic football right now, and Jay Cutler already appears to have thrown in the towel. Aaron Rodgers will lead the Packers to an easy win.

Carolina Panthers (3-5-1) @ Philadelphia Eagles (6-2)

Mark Sanchez

Carolina Panthers (3-5-1) @ Philadelphia Eagles (6-2)

Pick: Eagles

Even with Mark Sanchez under center, the Eagles don’t have too much to worry about on Monday night. The Panthers are simply playing terrible football right now, having lost their last three games. Especially considering the Eagles are 4-0 at home, expect LeSean McCoy and Co. to make easy work of Carolina.
