New England Patriots Being Most Followed Team Is Unsurprising

Move over, Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys, previously the most followed team, relinquished the top spot as the New England Patriots unsurprisingly took over as the most followed team in the NFL in Week 9.

NFLnow.com compiles different trends for each week of the NFL season, and the Week 9 results proved the Patriots were the most followed team in the NFL.

This should surprise no one. New England is an extremely polarizing team with head coach Bill Belichick and QB Tom Brady, who football fans either love or love to hate. Additionally, Brady, Belichick and company were getting set to host Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos in what was the biggest game of Week 9. The Patriots dominated the Broncos in every phase of the game and they are now the clear favorites in the AFC after their 43-21 win over Denver; the Patriots’ fifth straight win this season.

Brady, who clearly earns his “winner” label, was the second most followed player (also unsurprising) while TE Rob Gronkowski (who made an incredible one-handed catch against the Broncos—even Brady couldn’t believe Gronk made that catch and he hurled a four letter word when he asked his tight end how he managed to come down with the ball) moved up five spots and was the eighth most followed player for Week 9.

The Patriots have an extremely passionate fanbase while other NFL fans despise the Patriots with just as much fire, so the Patriots being the most followed team and Brady and Gronk being two of the top 10 most followed players for Week 9 is far from shocking. If the Patriots continue their winning ways and Gronk and Brady keep putting up MVP-type numbers, this trend should continue.
