The New York Giants lost their fourth game in a row on Sunday to the Seattle Seahawks, and while they aren’t mathematically eliminated from the playoffs yet, their season is all but over. The Giants are at a point in the season where it is more important to evaluate talent than it is to win games. The coaches and management need to figure out who will be part of the future and who won’t. One player they don’t need to worry about is Odell Beckham Jr.

The Giants drafted Beckham with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft which surprised some people, especially considering that there were some very good offensive lineman still available, most notably Zack Martin of the Dallas Cowboys.

After playing in only five games, though, it is pretty clear why the Giants decided to draft Beckham. New York knew they weren’t going to re-sign Hakeem Nicks, who had been their top receiver, so they decided they needed a new young playmaker for Eli Manning to throw to. Beckham has shown a ton of explosiveness, tremendous hands and has quickly become a star.

This week Beckham was coming off his best game against the Indianapolis Colts in which he had his first career 100-yard receiving game. But in his fifth game Beckham would have his biggest test yet when going up against the Seahawks’ “Legion of Boom.” Beckham passed the test with flying colors, catching seven passes for 108 yards while mostly being covered by Richard Sherman, a cornerback who many consider one of the best in the game.

Sherman is famous for his postgame comments after last year’s NFC Championship game when he called Michael Crabtree mediocre, yet he had nothing but great things to say about Beckham. Sherman called Beckham the “real deal” and said he is going to be a great player in the future.

The Seahawks showed how much respect they had for Beckham early on when they had Sherman shadowing him wherever he went. Sherman typically stays on one side of the field, but during this game he followed Beckham which is the ultimate sign of respect.

The Giants’ season hasn’t gone exactly as planned, but there are definitely positives to take out of this season so far, and the biggest one is definitely the play of Beckham. The receiving corps, which coming into the season was Victor Cruz and basically nobody else, now has a pretty good outlook for next season when Cruz returns from injury.

Beckham has burst onto the scene in a way nobody could have expected, and while his team hasn’t exactly had a very good year up to this point, they at least know they made a good choice with their first-round pick who has quickly become a star.
