On Tuesday, New England Patriots running back LeGarrette Bount voiced his opinion regarding the Patriots’ recent offensive struggles. With a large media crowd around his locker, Blount said the following:
“Yeah, yeah. Nobody can stop us but us, you know? Like I said, the focus is on us this week to correct all the things that haven’t been going so well for us.”
Blount went on to talk about how the Patriots don’t have a game this week so they need to focus on themselves and get better.
Some people might think Blount’s comments are cocky, but they aren’t. Teams and players have to be confident this time of year and understand they must work to control what they can. Blount is on the money with this assessment.
Tom Brady and the rest of the Patriots’ offense may not have played as strongly in the final two weeks of the regular season as they played in October and November, but wide receiver Julian Edelman missed those games due to a concussion, starting left guard Dan Connolly has unfortunately been banged up for weeks and Bill Belichick and the rest of coaching staff elected to sit right tackle Sebastian Vollmer and tight end Rob Gronkowski (possibly the most important player of all in the playoffs) against the Buffalo Bills in Week 17.
New England secured a first-round bye so they do not play until Jan. 10, and that will give injured players time to get healthy. And of course Vollmer and Gronk (who Patriots fans hope may finally be healthy and available for an entire postseason) will play in the Divisional Round game. Brady, Belichick and the rest of the Patriots players and coaching staff will work to get the offense back on track for the playoffs. Plus, the defense is much better than it has been in recent seasons.
The Patriots won’t automatically represent the AFC in Super Bowl XLIX, but they have to be the favorites right now. And Blount’s teammates and coaches as well as the New England fans should love his comments and attitude. He is confident but not cocky, and he understands that the Patriots must work to get better. They can’t just rest on their No. 1 seed, because a spot in the Super Bowl won’t just be handed to them.
