Howard Smith - US PRESSWIRE

In a shocking development, the Philadelphia Eagles have announced that the right hand of Michael Vick is not actually broken, despite initial reports that the quarterback would miss two to four weeks with a broken bone in his right hand.

Instead, head coach Andy Reid has reported that the hand is badly bruised and the swelling hasn’t gone down from yesterday. The fracture that had originally been reported by an x-ray during the game was revealed by a CT scan to just be a blood vessel.

The Eagles are now calling the injury a hand contusion.

The injury occurred when Vick’s right hand struck the helmet of New York Giants defensive end Chris Canty in the third quarter of Sunday’s loss.

Vick has not yet been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers.

But I wouldn’t play him.

I think that he has concussion symptoms either related to the previous week or from yesterday’s game, and the Eagles are using the hand injury as a cover-up instead of announcing the real injury.

I’m not saying I don’t think that Vick hurt his hand. I definitely do. But I find it strange that a misdiagnosis can be done by professional doctors.

I think the combination of his concussion and hand injury is severe enough that he won’t be able to play on Sunday. I would definitely start Vince Young, and allow him an opportunity to back up his “Dream Team” talk. I think we’ll beat San Francisco regardless of who the quarterback is.

Then I would revisit the Vick situation and see if he can play against Buffalo, who, by the way, appears to be a fantastic team in 2011.

But as of now, I wouldn’t play him on Sunday. It’s not worth it.
