Howard Smith - US PRESSWIRE
Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard, who is recovering from a well-publicized torn Achilles tendon, developed an infection in the wound, according to ESPN’s Jayson Stark.
The team’s head athletic trainer, Scott Sheridan, was reluctant to call it a setback because he said the team has not set a timetable for Howard’s return yet. Howard went to see Dr. Mark Myerson in Baltimore to have the wound treated.
Howard is slated to begin a five-year, $125 million contract extension in 2012, although he will not be able to see the field until likely May at the earliest. In his absence, the Phillies will look to any combination of Ty Wigginton, Jim Thome, and John Mayberry, Jr.
