Fandango Johnny Curtis WWE

Everyone who watches WWE even casually knows the music by now. It almost made the top of the United Kingdom’s iTunes singles chart. Live audiences are chanting the music.

But how many fans know the true story?

While the character of Fandango may be a fluke, the man who plays the character is not. As a matter of fact, he’s not even new to the business…and no, his real name is not Fandango. Curtis Jonathan Hussey, better known then as Johnny Curtis, trained with Killer Kowalski before his 1999 debut. His abilities have resulted in multiple titles, including Florida Championship Wrestling’s Tag Team Championship and Northeast Championship Wrestling’s single and tag team championships…just to name a few. In 2011, he was ranked 116 in Pro Wrestling Illustrated’s top 500 singles wrestlers.

Still think he’s just a flash in dancing pants?

Fandango is somewhat of another throwback to the past, that past being Val Venis. Same mannerisms, same sleazy countenance. Fandango, however, is more the modern, toned-down ‘PG’ version. And what better way to put over this ‘PG’ version than a very visible feud with Chris Jericho? The feud to this point had been somewhat sporadic at best, until very recently. On Monday night’s Raw this week, shades of what should have been the whole basis of the Jericho-Fandango feud were revealed when Jericho led a very brief dance with Fandango’s partner, Summer Rae. For those who don’t know, Jericho had a fairly successful run on ABC’s hit series “Dancing With the Stars.” The basis of Fandango’s character is dancing, though to call what he does ‘dancing’ is using the term very loosely. However, it is surprising that the competition of the dance hasn’t really come forth until now.

At least the WWE dropped the last ‘O’ from the name before he made his television debut. Even the music couldn’t have saved ‘Fandangoo’ from the abyss.

And, it’s a lot easier to “breathe the A’s” than the O’s would have been.

Whether fans actually call him Fandango or one of Jericho’s more amusing names for him, the talent is there. Hopefully, it won’t get lost in the WWE nonsense that rears its ugly head far too often.
