The Rock is currently out promoting the heck out his new movie, Hercules, which hits theaters this weekend. But along the way during his numerous promotional stops, there’s been one thing the people have wanted to know about — the now infamous Throwback Thursday ’90s photo Rock posted on Instagram.
Fanny pack and all, it was totally ’90s to say the least. Well, the picture was brought up Tuesday during Dwayne Johnson’s appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon:
You have to give Johnson credit for completely owning how ridiculous his attire was back in those days. At the time (1996) he was just breaking into WWF, and the entire Rock gimmick was still in its infancy.
Johnson first broke in as Rocky Maivia, a gimmick that paid tribute to his father (Rocky Johnson) and grandfather (Peter Maivia), but the fans weren’t buying it. They didn’t like Johnson as a squeaky clean babyface and “Rocky sucks” chants were born.
But as 1997 came along Johnson started to find his niche in the Nation of Domination as The Rock. Once he turned heel, his career really took off. Some argue that his best work was done as a heel, as it’s tough to say that’s inaccurate.
Nowadays Johnson is one of the biggest movie stars in the world. He’s constantly working on new films and he shows no signs of slowing down.
As far as a return to wrestling is concerned, Johnson has not ruled it out. He says he’d like to work another match in WWE, but that he’s just waiting for the right time and opponent.
