Top 10 Pay-Per-View Events In WWE History

WWE WrestleMania - Facebook

WWE has been showing pay-per-view events since the mid-1980s. WrestleMania is known as the "Showcase of Immortals" and "Granddaddy of Them All." There have, however, been some WrestleMania duds (WrestleMania IX, I'm looking at you). Other events have had great cards and even greater performances. Here are my top 10 pay-per-views in WWE History.

10. King of the Ring 1998

Notable Matches: Hell in a Cell, Steve Austin vs. Kane first blood, Ken Shamrock vs. The Rock King of the Ring finals

If for nothing else, this event is remembered by Undertaker throwing Mankind off the top of the cell and crashing through the announce table. The scary thing is that he got up and fell through the roof of the cell onto the mat -- it was insane. We also saw Kane capture the WWE title for the first time and the rise of Ken Shamrock winning the King of the Ring tournament. X-Pac and Owen Hart had a good match as well.

9. WrestleMania X (1994)

Notable Matches: Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart, Razor Ramon vs. Shawn Michaels ladder match

This is the first of five WrestleManias on my list. This was the beginning of WWE's "New Generation" era, and the first WrestleMania after Hulk Hogan left. Yokozuna defended the WWE title twice, once against Lex Luger and later against Bret Hart. The undercard was nothing to be excited about. This was a two-match show, but those two matches were matches of the year.

8. WrestleMania III (1987)

Notable Matches: Hulk Hogan vs. Andre the Giant, Randy Savage vs. Ricky Steamboat

This event was built around one match, Hogan vs. Andre, the two biggest names in professional wrestling. The match was alright, but the shining moment was Hogan slamming Andre and hitting the leg drop to win. Savage and Steamboat had the match of the night, going more than 14 minutes with the Intercontinental title on the line. With 12 matches on the card, it's hard to have more than two matches go more than 10 minutes. The view of more than 93,000 people filling the Silverdome was a sight to see.

7. Extreme Rules 2012

Notable Matches: Sheamus vs. Daniel Bryan 2 out of 3 Falls, C.M. Punk vs. Chris Jericho, John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar

WWE had a lot to live up to a month after WrestleMania XXVIII. Lesnar returned the night after and immediately began a feud with Cena (which is still going on today), and Punk and Jericho put on an awesome street fight. A month after Sheamus won the world title in 18 seconds, he and Bryan went 22 minutes in a show-stealer. Randy Orton and Kane also had a good match. While the definition of "extreme" has changed, this was one of the better shows in event history.

6. ECW One Night Stand 2005

Notable Matches: Chris Benoit vs. Eddie Guerrero, The Dudley Boyz vs. Tommy Dreamer and The Sandman

Every match on this show was a hit. Lance Storm and Chris Jericho started it off with a great technical match. Tajiri, Super Crazy and Little Guido had a spot-filled three-way dance. RVD and Paul Heyman both cut very emotional promos. Steve Austin and Sabu made surprise appearances. The Dudleyz vs. Dreamer and Sandman represented everything ECW was about: violence, passion, no remorse and dedication. This was the second-best pay-per-view of 2005.

5. Survivor Series 2002

Notable Matches: Elimination Chamber, Brock Lesnar vs. Big Show, Los Guerreros vs. Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle vs. Edge and Rey Mysterio

This was a special year for WWE, as the brand split happened and each show had an identity. As a joint-event, each show's stars shined. Paul Heyman turned on Lesnar and helped Big Show. Shawn Michaels' miraculous run continued, as he won his first world title in five years in the first-ever Elimination Chamber. Scott Steiner made his debut by taking out Matt Hardy and Chris Nowinski. The three-way tag match proved that the "SmackDown Six" were the future.

4. WrestleMania 19 (2003)

Notable Matches: The Rock vs. Steve Austin, Chris Jericho vs. Shawn Michaels, Hulk Hogan vs. Vince McMahon, Brock Lesnar vs. Kurt Angle

This event was the original "End of an Era." The Rock defeated Austin in what would be his final WWE match, and Michaels competed in his first WrestleMania in five years. His run after the back injury was so much better than his career before it. Hogan and McMahon was a match 15 years in the making. There was another three-team tag match that woke the crowd up, and Lesnar and Angle closed the show in the best match of the night. Lesnar botched the finish, but that didn't take away from what these two did in the ring.

3. SummerSlam 2002

Notable Matches: The Rock vs. Brock Lesnar, Shawn Michaels vs. Triple H, Kurt Angle vs. Rey Mysterio

The Year of Lesnar continued at the 2002 SummerSlam. Just a couple of months after winning the King of the Ring, Lesnar defeated Rock and won his first WWE Championship. Michaels made his return from a back injury to compete in a brutal match against his former best friend, current enemy Triple H, and he didn't have any ring rust on him. Angle and Mysterio kicked off the show and showed a preview of what they would do a few years later. Undertaker vs. Test and Edge vs. Eddie Guerrero were two underrated matches.

2. WrestleMania 21 (2005)

Notable Matches: Kurt Angle vs. Shawn Michaels, Money in the Bank match, Randy Orton vs. Undertaker, Triple H vs. Batista, John Cena vs. JBL

This could be argued as the best WrestleMania. We saw the first Money in the Bank ladder match, won by Edge, and Angle and Michaels put on a wrestling classic. Cena and Batista both won their first world championships, and Orton took a shot at Undertaker and "The Streak." Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio showed flashes of what their rivalry would be years later. It's hard to pick an pay-per-view with a more solid card than this, but there is just one.

1. WrestleMania X-Seven (2001)

Notable Matches: The Rock vs. Steve Austin, Undertaker vs, Triple H, Shane McMahon vs. Vince McMahon, TLC 2

This, in my opinion, is the best WWE pay-per-view of all time. The card was stacked, the matches amazed, and the stage was awesome. Kane, Raven and Big Show had a entertaining Hardcore Championship match. Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit put on a wrestling clinic for 14 minutes. Shane and Vince beat each other within an inch of their lives. Edge, Christian, The Hardy Boyz and Dudley Boyz almost killed each other in the best TLC match ever. Undertaker and Triple H is a match often forgotten, and Rock and Austin proved why they are the two best in the business.

Throw in a comedic Gimmick Battle Royal and nice undercard matches, and there is the makings of a perfect WWE pay-per-view. While some have gotten close, none have been able to incorporate all the elements like WrestleMania X-Seven did.
