Report: Dolphins Have Their Eyes on Bill Cowher and Jon Gruden For Head Coach Next Season
(Robert Mayer/US PRESSWIRE)

It seems like only a matter of time before the Miami Dolphins part ways with head coach Tony Sparano. Not only is the team off to a horrendous 0-6 start, but the Dolphins are 1-12 in their last 13 games at home–which is why Sparano’s days are most likely numbered.

So who would be Sparano’s replacement be if he received the boot in the middle of the season? While the organization would most likely go with an interim head coach for the remainder of the season, it appears Dolphins owner Stephen Ross already has his eyes on two strong candidates–Bill Cowher and Jon Gruden.

According to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Ross has his eyes on both of the Super Bowl-winning coaches who have shown strong interest in a possible return to the sidelines in 2012. Both Cowher and Gruden currently work as NFL analysts, but everybody knows coaching is their passion–which is why there’s a good chance they’ll have head coaching jobs next season.

From Cole’s article:

“As the winless Dolphins prepare to start another coaching search – with their eyes apparently on former Super Bowl-winning coaches Bill Cowher and Jon Gruden – Miami fans should be aware that the feeling is mutual. Both Cowher and Gruden have quietly planted seeds that they would like to return to coaching and are more than open to listening to an offer from Miami owner Stephen Ross. According to two sources in and around the team, former Dolphins quarterback and current CBS studio analyst Dan Marino has been telling Dolphins management that Cowher, an analyst partner, is geared up for a return. Cowher is also close with Ross confidant Carl Peterson. As for Gruden, he was in Miami for a Monday night game in the opening week and told more than a few folks that he’ll be ready to go next offseason.”

Whether it would be Cowher or Gruden, either coach would be a great addition for a Dolphins’ team that has become the laughing stock of the NFL in 2011–especially after their embarrassing 18-15 loss to the Denver Broncos in Week 7. Of course, nothing will happen until the 2011 season comes to an official end–so this is nothing but talk for now.
