New England Patriots Set to Use Franchise Tag on Wes Welker?
Despite losing to the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLVI, New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker is arguably coming off the best season of his nine-year career after recording 122 catches for 1,569 yards (career high) to go along with nine touchdowns (another career high). There’s no question the wide receiver deserves a hefty long-term deal, but for now–it looks like Welker will have to accept the franchise tag for the 2012 season.
Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe was recently a guest on Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald’s radio show and discussed how he’s “certain” the Patriots are going to tag the Pro Bowl wideout. While this may not be as satisfying as a long-term deal, the franchise tag is expected to pay wide receivers $9.4 million in 2012–so Welker will still be receiving a hefty amount of compensation.
Here’s what Bedard said courtesy of Salguero’s article:
“He’s going to be tagged, that I know for pretty much certain,” said Bedard, who clarified that it’s the franchise tag the Pats would use. “If they don’t, he’s going to sign with the Jets and they’re going to have to try and cover him twice a year, or the Dolphins … They want him back. I don’t see why things would change now, but the way it stood before the Super Bowl, they’re going to tag him.”
