Report: Denver Broncos Began Shopping Tim Tebow at NFL Combine
(Ed Mulholland/US PRESSWIRE)

One of the biggest stories from the 2012 offseason was the Denver Broncos shipping Tim Tebow to the New York Jets after bringing Peyton Manning on board to be the team’s new starting quarterback. While the move came as no surprise after the signing of Manning considering the Broncos gave the future Hall of Fame quarterback a $96 million contract, it does come as a bit of a surprise that John Elway and company attempted to trade Tebow well before Manning even became available.

According to Tania Ganguli of The Florida Times-Union via Marc Sessler of NFL.com, the Broncos started “quietly shopping” Tebow back at the beginning of February when the NFL Combine was taking place. Despite helping Denver reach the playoffs last year for the first time since the 2005 season, Tebow was traded to New York back on March 22–one day after the Manning deal became official.

As crazy as it sounds, the news about Denver shopping Tebow well before the trade to New York shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone considering Elway never seemed sold on Tebow being his franchise quarterback. Sure, the playoff appearance and numerous come-from-behind wins made a strong case for Tebow throughout the regular season, but his 46.5 completion percentage was far from impressive.

The fact that Denver was considering a trade involving Tebow a month before they knew Manning would be available shows how sold Elway was on the former first-round pick to be his starting quarterback. Even if Tebow helped the Broncos win the AFC West last season, there’s no debate that Manning is clearly the better option when it comes to quarterback–assuming he can return to his old dominant form.
