Report: Minnesota Vikings Told Bill Parcells to “Name His Price”

According to several reports this morning, Minnesota Vikings owner Zygi Wilf recently told legendary coach Bill Parcells to “name his price”, and is pursuing the 70 year old to take over for embattled head coach Leslie Frazier.

While the timing might be somewhat odd with the NFL Draft right around the corner, it nonetheless appears the Vikings are in hot pursuit of Parcells and want to provide him the type of decision-making ability and autonomy which has led to success in previous coaching positions.

At this point, it’s reasonable to assume the only way Parcells would be drawn out of retirement would be in this type of environment. While the New Orleans Saints– more specifically, suspended head coach Sean Peyton– have been in contact with Parcells, the Minnesota opportunity could be more permanent, and therefore more attractive long-term than being a one-year fill-in for a coach who is almost certain to return.

If Zygi Wilf is indeed willing to let Parcells “name his price” it would be a bizarre turn of events. For one, Parcells would be forced to patch together a staff in a very short period of time, and prepare this staff for the NFL Draft according to his plan’s for the Vikings’ future.

Could it be that Bill Parcells is just playing everyone involved in a desire to gain some additional traction in his decision making going forward? It’s hard to imagine that a 70 year old former head coach with a cushy job at ESPN would be ready to undergo the rigors of day-to-day NFL life again without someone making it very worth his while.

Does Parcells actually intend to stay at ESPN, and is just using his “coaching search” as a way to gain some leverage and demand more money from the Mothership in the process?

Who knows for sure, but we’ll all find out very, very soon.
