The San Diego Chargers have the 15th pick in the fourth round of the 2012 NFL Draft, which is the 110th overall selection.  Antoine Cason, Quentin Jammer, Shareece Wright and Marcus Gilchrist make up San Diego’s cornerbacks.  Cason was torched in coverage for most of the season, Jammer will be 33 years old at the start of the season and according to Pro Football Focus, was one of the worst corners in 2011. San Diego’s cornerbacks combined for four interceptions and 29 pass deflections last year. Omar Bolden is rated as the 127th prospect, 16th at his position and projected as a fourth round pick, so he may be the most realistic choice for San Diego.

Bolden missed the entire 2011 season with an injury, but had three INTs and six pass deflections in 12 games during his 2010 season with the Arizona State Sun Devils.  If San Diego drafts Bolden, it would be a move to add depth at the cornerback position.  Cason and Jammer will be unrestricted free agents after the 2012 season, so San Diego’s focus may be to select a cornerback in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft even if they bring one or both of them back.

San Diego might decide to bring back Cason after the 2012 season because he started 29 of the 32 games in 2010 and 2011.  Also, Cason will be 26 at the end of the 2012 season.  This could be Jammer’s last season with the team, but one thing is for sure, San Diego needs to draft a cornerback or a safety that can be a threat to pick off passes.  Eric Weddle led the team with seven INTs and the rest of his teammates had 10 during the 2011 season.
