Howard Smith-US PRESSWIRE

Norv Turner is entering his sixth season as head coach of the San Diego Chargers.  Even though Turner had a 58-82-1 record before coming to San Diego, the team achieved immediate success with him in 2007 as they went from a second round loss following a bye week in 2006 to two playoff wins in Turner’s first season.  San Diego would go on to win their first playoff game in 2008 before losing to the eventual Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers in round two. Turner had a 32-16 record in his first three seasons from 2007-2009.  However, San Diego had a 17-15 record from 2010-2011.

San Diego had a 3-1 record in the playoffs under Turner in his first four playoff games with the team, but are 0-2 in their last two playoff games, have not made the playoffs since 2009 and have not won a playoff game since 2008. The Chargers were reportedly interested in former Pittsburgh coach Bill Cowher last season in December.  San Diego has regressed after a 13-3 record in 2009 and a loss in their only playoff game, they were 9-7 in 2010 and 8-8 in 2011.  The fact that Turner was brought back for another season in 2012 is a major sign that Cowher was not interested or a deal could not get done.

Cowher was the head coach on Pittsburgh when they beat the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XL and was also the head coach when they lost to the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl XXX.  Cowher has a regular season record of 149-90-1 and a 12-9 record in the playoffs. Jon Gruden was also mentioned as a potential replacement and he was the head coach of a Super Bowl winning team in 2002. Gruden has a 95-81 record in the regular season and is 5-4 in the playoffs.  Gruden’s passion for the game is similar to that of San Diego’s quarterback Philip Rivers, so the two could be a great fit together.  There are plenty of other names out there, but Cowher or Gruden would be the most successful man for the job should San Diego fail in the 2012 NFL season.

  1. John Sanzal says:

I remember years ago during another pre-season when Tom Coughlin was voted the most likely to be fired before the end of the season. That year he won his 1st SuperBowl. Maybe that won’t happen here, but speculating about a coach getting fired before the first pre-season game isn’t really a sports article. There’s a lot going on in training camps. Get in the game.

    • Kenny Gardner says:

The article says “Who will replace Norv Turner should they fail?” not “Who will replace Norv Turner?” as in I am expecting the team to fail. In order to keep his job, Turner has to win multiple playoff games and he could be fired mid season if they hit a rough patch as they did three of the last four seasons. A 4-8 start to the 2008 season, a 2-5 start in 2010 and a six game losing streak in 2011. Who are you to tell me what is and what is not a really a sports article? If the title of my article said Bill Cowher, Jon Gruden or Rex Ryan will replace Norv Turner after 2012, I would agree that this is not really a sports article. However, I asked a hypothetical question. It makes more sense to say this article is not fair to Turner due to the team not playing a preseason game yet
