San Diego Chargers backup quarterback Charlie Whitehurst hurt his left knee during the team’s first practice. San Diego-Tribune writer Michael Gehlken reported that the team is looking for a veteran quarterback.  There are quarterbacks on the market who could fill the backup role for San Diego.

Former Buffalo Bills, Oakland Raiders and Miami Dolphins QB J.P. Losman is currently a free agent. In Losman’s career, he has a 10-23 record as a starting QB to go along with 33 touchdowns and 34 interceptions. Losman averages almost seven yards per pass attempt which ranks 28th among active quarterbacks and has a completion percentage of 59 percent.  Losman will be 31 years old when the 2012 season begins, so he could be a long term backup for San Diego.

Jeff Garcia could be a one year option for the Chargers.  Garcia has played in one game since the 2008 season, but San Diego kept Billy Volek from 2006-2011 who did not start a game after the 2005 season and he played in one significant game during his tenure with the team.  In his career, Garcia has a 58-58 record with a 62 percent completion percentage, 161 touchdowns and 83 interceptions.  From 2006-2008, Garcia had 35 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.  Garcia ranks 10th among active players in QB rating, but he will be 42 years old when the season starts, so he would not be a long term option.

When Whitehurst got a chance to start with the Seattle Seahawks, he had a 1-3 record, completed 54 percent of his passes for three touchdowns and four interceptions. Whitehurst was not good enough to start over Tarvaris Jackson last season who had a career record of 10-10 with 24 touchdowns and 22 interceptions.  The goal in acquiring a number two QB is to have one with success at the professional level.  Philip Rivers became the starting QB in 2006 and did not miss a game from 2006-2011, so hopefully this trend continues because there are not many backup quarterbacks left on the market who appear to be worth signing.
