The San Diego Chargers are entering a crucial season. San Diego has not made the playoffs since the 2009 NFL season and has not won a playoff game since the 2008 season. Not only that, but a list came out with the ages for all NFL teams and San Diego led with an average of 27 years old.

The Pittsburgh Steelers entered the 2011 season as the NFL’s oldest team and they lost in the first round of the playoffs. San Diego was the third oldest team last year, finished the season at 8-8 and missed the playoffs due to a tiebreaker scenario. It is interesting to look at other teams in different sports as well to see if age plays a factor.

The Dallas Mavericks were the oldest team in the NBA last season and they lost in the first round of the playoffs. The New Jersey Devils were the oldest team in the NHL last year and they made it to the Stanley Cup Finals before losing in six games.

The Tampa Bay Rays were the oldest team in MLB last year and they lost in the first round of the playoffs. San Diego cannot afford a first round loss or a loss in their first playoff game should they get a bye week.

The Chargers lost three of their last four playoff games, so anything less than a trip to the AFC Championship game is not going to make much of a statement.

Philip Rivers is one of two quarterbacks who threw for at least 4,000 yards from 2008-2011 while he averaged 30 touchdown passes per season during this time. I am sure that frustration is building for him as well as other members of San Diego’s franchise, so we will see what happens.
