Brandon Carr: CB, Chiefs

John Rieger-US PRESSWIRE

Though the Bucs are likely to take Morris Claiborne with the 5th pick, they will still have a need for a second cover corner. Ronde Barber is on borrowed time and we still don’t know what his intentions are now that coach Schiano has been hired. Aqib Talib still has his court date coming up, so his long term future is in jeopardy as well. Coach Schiano has stressed he wants “character” guys and Talib does not fit that mold. E.J. Biggers was toasted too often when he stepped in on a full time role and is better trusted in the nickel package. Elbert Mack is still progressing, but he too has some work ahead of him. After all is said and done, if Barber retires and Talib gets the boot, the Bucs could be looking at Biggers and Mack as starters. Drafting Claiborne and signing a young but proven corner like Carr immediately puts the Buccaneers in a better situation. There are better corners which will be available but guys like Kelvin Hayden, Brent Grimes, and Tracy Porter are likely to resign with their teams than sign with the Bucs whom play in the same division. Carr has played in a 3-4/Cover 3 scheme at Kansas City but is regarded as one of the better young corners in the league. He has notched at least one interception in each of his four seasons, with four picks in 2011 alone. At 25 years old he would offer stability at the position along with Claiborne for the duration of Schiano’s contract.
