The trade deadline is only a couple weeks away and a lot of struggling teams are trying to make some big adjustments.

The Tampa Bay Lightning will not play defenseman Pavel Kubina tonight against the San Jose Sharks as a plan to prepare for the future.

Lightning GM Steve Yzerman has asked the 34-year old Czech Republic native what teams he would be willing to be traded to. Since Kubina has a no-trade clause in his contract he cannot be traded to any team without him agreeing to the terms.

The Tampa Bay Lightning are tied for 13th place in the Eastern Conference with the Buffalo Sabres. Although they couldn’t be much closer to the bottom though as they are only one point ahead of the last place and division rival Carolina Hurricanes.

Unfortunately for Kubina he is on track for the lowest season point total in his career. In 52 games he has three goals, eight assists, and a plus-1 rating but he still brings a lot to the game of hockey with tough and physical defense.

Kubina is also coming up to a big milestone in his career. He has played 953 career NHL games and is only 47 away from reaching the 1,000 game milestone. This is huge for the defenseman who has plenty of good hockey left in his career and has done a lot for the Lightning.

In his 10 seasons in Tampa bay Kubina has 72 goals, 243 points and he helped the Lightning win the Stanley Cup in 2004.

Kubina if he isn’t traded is also in the second year of his two-year contract.

He doesn’t sound very good so hopefully he gets traded for someone useful.
