Washington Redskins set to Pursue Peyton Manning, Matt Flynn, and Kyle Orton
ESPN’s NFL Insider, Adam Schefter (who also has a good rapport with Mike Shanahan) made a few interesting Redskins related tweets yesterday:
As a Redskins fan, I’ve said numerous of times, I am keeping an open mind when it comes to the Quarterback position. I trust Mike Shanahan to make a sound decision.
There will be some form of risk with any guy he decides to go with. Its hard to argue taking another Quarterback over a healthy Peyton Manning. He’ll be 36, but if healthy, Manning will play another 3 to 4 seasons. He is not done with football. As Schefter made clear, Peyton is willing to sign a incentive-laden deal. I’d take a “Pay for Play” Manning. Which would make this signing less of a risk. The Redskins will still look to draft a Quarterback if they sign Peyton.
Matt Flynn may actually be harder to scout than some 2012 QB prospects. He doesn’t have enough NFL tape to suggest he’s a legit starter in this league, and you can’t go back to his college tape because Green Bay improved his throwing motion and footing. However, he’s young, and most believe he can be a good Quarterback. Signing Matt Flynn will cost a pretty penny, and you have to be certain this guy can improve the position. I actually find it interesting that Adam Schefter added his name to the mix, because most have been under the impression that Washington has or will have no interest in Flynn.
As for Kyle Orton, I’m not the biggest fan of his. I think he’s a game manager, and has actually forced more turnovers these past few years. Now, he was under a strange situation in Denver with “Tebow Mania” which could have caused him to struggle at times. Its never easy for a QB to stay focused when your full fanbase is screaming for the backup to play. Kyle Orton will come cheaper than Matt Flynn, however, you would still have to pay him a substantial amount of money. He’s a proven commodity, unlike Flynn, and would be less of a risk… However, the Redskins have to make sure Orton would upgrade the position.
If the Redskins decide to go Quarterback via Free Agency, that opens a ton of options with the #6 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. Washington could trade back, or stay put and get a Micheal Floyd, David DeCastro, or Riley Reiff. Either way, I strongly believe Washington goes with an offensive player.
