Marvin Gentry-US PRESSWIRE

During the week, I engaged in a Twitter mock draft facilitated by the National Football Post. Last year was my first time apart of twitter mocks, and I must say, it is very cool and innovative. The beauty of these are, you’re bringing 32 NFL draftniks together on one platform, to be general managers of each team.

I was honored when asked to be the Washington Redskins General Manager. Unfortunately, I took over the football operations after the first round pick was selected… But I did give input on the 1st pick and managed to haul a decent group of players, giving a realistic feel to help understand what exactly goes into drafting football players.

With these twitter mocks, it also gives you a sense at the depth each draft has. Overall, its a fun way to do a mock draft, and it gives you a realistic feel having other GM’s participating.

*Each Redskins pick will be linked with a scouting report by NFP’s Scout, Wes Bunting.

*Trades were used in this mock, including both draft picks (up to 2013) and players. I’ll explain the trades after each round.

TRADES:

  • Seattle traded its 12th and 43rd picks and a 2013 1st round pick to the Vikings for the 3rd pick.
  • Bucs traded 5th overall to Jaguars for the 7th, 38th, 71st, and 135th picks AND a 2013 2nd rd pick
  • Panthers sent 9th, 105th, and FS Jordan Pugh for Jets 2013 1st, 2012 47th, 78th picks and CB Kyle Wilson.
  • Cowboys traded 14th pick to Chargers for 18th and 80th picks.
  • Rams have agreed to trade 2012 3rd rd pick to Redskins for their 2013 2nd rd pick.
  • Bears agreed to a trade for Bengals 21st pick for the Bears 2nd (50) 3rd (81) & a 2013 1st round pick.
  • Patriots trade 27th (1st) and 95th (3rd) picks to Saints for 2013 1st, and 2012 59th (2nd) and 91th (3rd).

My take on the Redskins first round pick: As said, I wasn’t apart of the draft during the 1st round. If I had the chance to pick a player, I would have attempted to trade up for Robert Griffin III. However, this is a scenario that could happen. The Redskins may not trade up for RG3, which opens plenty of options for that slot. In this particular mock, Washington selected Riley Reiff, who is a great player with huge upside. That’s a solid pick to solidify both tackle spots.

Redskins 2nd round pick review: In the 2nd round, I decided to target a QB. Unfortunately the guy I really wanted (Ryan Tannehill) went to the Dolphins in the 1st round. Again, this gives you a real life scenario, because if the Redskins do target Tannehill, you may not be able to take a risk by not selecting him at 6 overall. I decided to trade down in the second round, and select Brandon Weeden.

TRADES:

  • Chiefs now pick at 66 and 181 with Redskins receiving picks 108 and 112 from KC.

Redskins 3rd round review: Earlier in the draft, Washington traded for an extra 3rd round pick from the Rams. I took that pick and traded it to the Chiefs. After that trade, I ended up with five 4th round draft picks. Using the Redskins original 3rd round pick, I chose Joe Adams. I’m a huge fan of his. I hoped to trade back into the 2nd round for Stephen Hill, who I’m also very high on, however he was selected right after I took Brandon Weeden.

TRADES:

  • Panthers have traded their 6th (170) and 7th (201) round pick, plus a 2013 6th round pick to the Saints for 141.

Redskins 4th round review: Thanks to a few trades I made, and the original 2 fourth round picks, the Redskins ended up with a whopping 5 fourth round draft picks. As I said, this gives you a good feel of the depth in this draft, and the 4th round could be a money round for teams.   With the 5 fourth round draft picks, I went best player available with need in mind.  Hosley and Judie are two Cb’s with great potential, and would solidify the Redskins secondary. I somewhat regret the Marvin McNutt pick, I should have gone with my guy Tommy Streeter… however, going by the draft board, McNutt was ranked higher. I felt very good about selecting Derek Dennis, who for his size, is very athletic.
