2011 NFL Draft Picks: Baltimore Ravens
The Baltimore Ravens are coming off an impressive 12-4 season that ended with a second-round loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers and entered the 2011 NFL Draft with numerous areas in need of improvement. Here’s a look at the newest members of the Ravens.
Colorado cornerback Jimmy Smith: Round 1, Pick 27
Jimmy Smith fell late in the first round to his off the field issues, but that shouldn’t be a problem once he meets Ray Lewis and Ed Reed. This could end up working great for the Ravens if Smith can behave and stay out of trouble.
Maryland wide receiver Torrey Smith: Round 2, Pick 58
The Ravens can always use help at wide receiver and Torrey Smith is another great weapon for Joe Flacco in the passing game. As a junior, Smith caught 67 passes for 1,055 yards with 12 touchdowns.
UCF offensive tackle Jah Reid: Round 3, Pick 85
At 6’7″ and 330 pounds, Jah Reid is one of the biggest lineman’s in this year’s class and should compete for the starting job at right tackle. He’s got a great work ethic and is a great pick for Baltimore in the third round.
Indiana wide receiver Tandon Doss: Round 4, Pick 123
Apparently, one of Joe Flacco’s requests this offseason was for the Ravens to land Tandon Doss–who has great hands and is great after the catch. Looks like Mr. Flacco is satisfied–now let’s see if his request pays off.
Texas cornerback Chykie Brown: Round 5, Pick 164
Most analysts expected Chykie Brown to be off the board by now–so the Ravens should consider themselves lucky he was still available in the fifth round. Great in man-to-man coverage, but gets confused at times when playing in zone.
Mississippi State defensive end Pernell McPhee: Round 5, Pick 165
Pernell McPhee contains great upper body strength and knows how to pressure the quarterback. Sounds like the perfect player for the Ravens’ defense.
Virgina Tech quarterback Tyrod Taylor: Round 6, Pick 180
Obviously, there’s no need for a quarterback–but Tyrod Taylor has amazing talent using both his arms and legs. Who knows–maybe the Ravens can find a way to use him at other positions besides quarterback.
Georgia Tech running back Anthony Allen: Round 7, Pick 225
A great power back that makes a nice addition to the backfield with Ray Rice–especially if Willis McGahee hits free agency. He had his best season as a senior by finishing with 1,316 rushing yards with seven touchdowns.
