Reports: Texas Longhorns G J’Covan Brown to Enter 2012 NBA Draft
Don McPeak-US PRESSWIRE

The most recent in a long line of talented Texas Longhorns guards, junior shooting guard J’Covan Brown, has declared himself eligible for the 2012 NBA Draft.

One of the country’s most creative scorers, the variety of offensive moves Brown has in his arsenal have caught the eye of NBA scouts and opposing coaches across the country. During the 2011-2012 season, Brown averaged a career-high 20.1 points per game, also adding 3.3 rebounds per game and 3.8 assists per game.

Brown’s ball handling has improved over four seasons and he made far fewer unforced errors this season than in years past, but if there is a knock on his game this is it.

NBA guards will make life much more difficult for Brown than their Big 12 counterparts, and his need to score off the dribble will be much more pronounced in the Association than it has been during his time on the Forty Acres.

With an increased focus on getting to the rim– which he has shown the ability to do with ease at times– Brown could have the type of offensive game which could make a very quick impact for several NBA teams.

The noted NBA Draft projections site, DraftExpress.com, has Brown landing in the late first-round to the Dallas Mavericks with the No. 25 overall pick.  This is an intriguing projection given the aging Dallas back-court and the team’s constant need for an offensive jolt.

This is the role which Brown will fill during his time in the league– instant offense.

At 6’1″, 200, he is strong enough to back down opposing shooting guards and occasionally post up and score with his back to the basket, but is too undersized to guard most NBA shooting guards who fall between 6’4″ and 6’7″. This could create match up issues for whomever drafts Brown, but Rick Barnes never had an issue with him on the floor because he was undersized.

There is no doubt that J’Covan Brown can score.

He’s a good shooter, but a great scorer.

Scorers have long NBA careers.
