Los Angeles Angels’ Kendry Morales Will Determine the AL West Champion

To paraphrase The Rock, FI-NALLY! Kendry Morales HAS COME BACK to Los Angeles. Morales – who has recovered from his horrific leg injury he received from a freak accident in 2010 –  is back and hopefully better than ever for the Los Angeles Angels.

As we all know by now, the Angels had a roster overhaul this winter. They have a new catcher (Chris Iannetta), a new set-up man (LaTroy Hawkins), a new starting pitcher (CJ Wilson), and finally they have a new first baseman (Albert Pujols). Adding those four quality players – and in the case of Wilson and Pujols – great players will only help the Angels chase down the defending American League West champions, the Texas Rangers.

I know it’s easy for fans to take the Angels this year in the AL West. But according to my projections,  I have the Rangers winning their third straight division title. However, with the recent development of the progressing Kendry Morales, I might have a change of heart before the season begins.

I know it’s only Spring Training, but Kendry Morales has picked up right where he left off in 2010. In 20 at-bats, Morales has 10 hits and two home runs. And in true Morales fashion, he hasn’t taken a walk in those 20 at-bats.

If Morales is healthy enough to be the everyday DH, it’s expected he will Pujols’ protection in the line-up. That is precisely why Morales holds the Angels’ fate in his hands. If Morales can go back to being the player he was in 2009-2010, the Angels will have a line-up on par with the powerhouse Rangers.

It’s safe to say the Angels have the better starting rotation between the two teams. Unfortunately for the Rangers, they can’t trot out three pitchers that can individually reach a 5-WAR season, although their rotation is nothing to sneeze at.

Like many other baseball fans, I am excited about the race out West. And I am looking forward to see if Kendry Morales puts the Angels over the hump.
