More contradicting smoke signals are floating out of Valley Ranch. On Wednesday, Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said his team has no plans to trade cornerback Mike Jenkins and even called the player a part of the team’s future plans.

Jerry says there's no plan to trade Mike Jenkins, calling him a vital part of the team short-term and long-term.

This is another load of horse radish because reports were confirmed over the past two weeks the Cowboys made and received calls to other NFL teams regarding a trade for Jenkins. When Dallas traded up to draft LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the writing was on the wall for Jenkins and no one inside the Cowboys’ organization denied that.

However, now Jones is making it appear he thinks Jenkins is a part of Dallas’ long-term plans, which he should be, but that can’t be true. There’s not enough room on one football team for three cornerbacks like Jenkins, Claiborne and new free agent signee Brandon Carr and those players know that as well as Jones.

Now keeping all three players would be the ideal situation for the Cowboys and if you’re a loyal www.RantSports.com reader, you know that’s been preached a lot here lately. However, the fact Dallas has already tried to trade Jenkins means he’s not part of the long-term plan, especially since he’ll be a free agent at the end of the season.

Of course, Jones could have meant the entirety of the season when he said “long-term,” but one would think just the 2012 season would be considered “short-term.”

The ideal scenario would be for the Cowboys to sign Jenkins to a long-term deal and have a three-headed monster at the cornerback position and that seems like a reality the way Jones is talking these days. However, anyone familiar with Jones knows just because he says Jenkins is “a vital part of the long-term” plan doesn’t mean he actually believes that. In fact, it’s safe to bet a large amount of money that Jones doesn’t believe that.

Now, rumors from Valley Ranch over the past two weeks also stated the Cowboys literally didn’t get a single offer for Jenkins, which is hard to believe at first, but it actually makes sense. Jenkins is coming off shoulder surgery this off-season, so no team is willing to take a risk on him. But don’t be surprised if Jenkins is a starter at the beginning of the 2012 season so the Cowboys can showcase him as trade bait. Then don’t be shocked once Jones trades Jenkins just before the trade deadline. “Part of the long-term” plan…indeed.

Jenkins should be part of the long-term plan, but he’s not.

I hope they keep them all. That way, if something happens to one, they don’t lose a step. On the other hand, Cowboys still has other needs like 3rd WR, an upgrade at safety and DE and maybe the offensive line. Doubt Jenkins would be enough to trade for an upgrade and it be even swap. Dallas would probably lose a draft pick too.

Now what if they traded the draft pick Claiborne? I wouldn’t put it past JJ. I am thinking blockbuster like the Hershel Walker trade. I know, that sounds crazy because if they had planned to do that then they wouldn’t have traded up for the pick. But, MC might have plenty of value for 3 guys and they might be able to unload these other guys with him.

  2. Malik says:

because he says there are no plans to trade Jenkins doesn’t mean he can’t listen to offers. We can keep him we have a need at free safety and he would be a upgrade over Scandrick in the slot – those who think he couldn’t do it are being ridiculous like Jenkins has taken every snap on the outside like he hasn’t had to follow receivers in motion into the slot. I like the Idea of one safety and three CB’s in base defense to match up with pass catching TE’s or fast pass catching RB’s.

Jenkins had one really good season. Period! Other than that, the Boys secondary has stunk for the past 3-4 years minimum. When you add in the lack of blitz packages (by Wade Phillips) and no true 1-2 gap nose tackle – it is clearly visible why Dallas got torched repeatedly last year and even more so the year before. Scandrick is a nickel at best, so the signing of Carr as a #2 CB and moving Scandrick back to his natural position only makes sense. Claiborne will come in and within the 1st 3-4 games become the #1 shut down corner. Which again puts the onus on Carr and Scandrick. I see Scandrick as the weak link in the CB area but in a cover 2, he should be okay as long as Sensabaugh returns back to his previous form and/or Pool gives it a banner effort as he seeks a longer term contract(and he knows Coach Ryans system). The safety play will be a big part of our defensive success and again I see this as an area of need, perhaps addressed in next years draft? Lastly, a true 3-4 nose tackle that demands double teaming is on the wish list as Dallas does not currently have that player on the team that can bulldoze, shed blockers and bust through and/or disrupt the offensive schemes and do it for 40-60 snaps. Minor tweaks to the secondary, the LB’s are good and the D-line will improve. If we find the #3 receiver and incorporate more two TE sets with a reliance on running the ball (especially in 4th qtr), moving the chains, eating the clock (game management Coach Garrett!!!) we have a 9-7 team and possibly 10-6. However the real opportunities for deeper runs towards the Super Bowl will start in 2013. That and 5 bucks will buy you an overly priced cup of coffee.
