Mark L. Baer - US PRESSWIRE

The Denver Broncos made the biggest two moves of the NFL offseason when they signed Peyton Manning, and then traded Tim Tebow. It is widely believed that if Manning had signed elsewhere, then Tebow would have returned as the Broncos starting quarterback. While none of us know for sure, all the signs point to the fact that Tebow still would have been traded and the Broncos would have moved on.

John Elway was never comfortable with Tebow as the starting quarterback of the Broncos and even though he said the right things at the end of the 2011 season, it is my belief that the plan all along was to move Tebow. Elway and the Broncos got a break when Manning became available and signed with them, but Tebow was gone either way. If Manning had gone somewhere else, I believe that the Broncos would have signed a veteran like Jason Campbell and then drafted a guy to groom. It may or may not have been, Brock Osweiler who they drafted in the second round this year but it would have been someone like that. There are a number of reasons that I believe the playoff loss to the New England Patriots was always going to be Tebow’s last game as a Bronco.

The first reason is that loss to the Patriots. I know that game scared Elway and the rest of the Broncos front office. They didn’t expect to win that game but I believe they expected to have a better showing than 45-10. It’s not all on Tebow, of course, but he could do nothing against a team that was giving up yards in bunches all season. The Broncos knew they were going to have a difficult time slowing down the Patriots but when Tebow looked so inept against that defense, it probably sealed his fate.

The fact that Tebow did not improve as the 2011 season progressed also had to scare the Broncos. They knew he was going to struggle when he first took over in terms of his completion percentage, but they expected that to improve as he played. Instead of getting better as he played, Tebow got worse. If you take away the playoff win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, Tebow played his worse football in the final three games of the regular season and then in the divisional loss to the Patriots. Had Tebow improved as he played, then the Broncos may have been more willing to go forward with him.

I also believe that Elway genuinely likes Tebow and wanted him to succeed but he was only reacting to what he was seeing. What he was seeing was a guy who was never going to be a good enough passer to lead a team to a Super Bowl. Yes the Denver Broncos signed Manning, but that’s not when Tebow Time in Denver ended. It ended on that cold January night in New England.

12 Rants to “NFL Rumors: Tebow Time Was Over For the Denver Bro...”

    What is that smell?

    answer: This article

    • DrunkenBroncoholic says:

ya cause Phillip Rivers and Marion Barber had nothing to do with Tebow going to the playoffs….tebow “haters” dont always think it was the defense, but it sure was Marion Barber’s 2 blatant mistakes, followed by a Phillip Rivers win against the Raiders…Tebow couldnt get it done against the chiefs so the chargers had to vault them into the playoffs…keep drinking kool aid.

  2. CSweat says:

This has to be the dumbest article I have read to date…the there have been quite a few. Unless this “author” (or perhaps more appropriately called “blogger” or simply “irrelevant person with a keyboard”) has developed the ability to read minds (which would require that he possess one himself) then this entire article is basically made up BS. Ohhh, the Pats loss “scared” the entire front office…you know, the guys who had decided to pack it in when Orton flamed out. Last time I checked TEBOW DID NOT GIVE UP 45 POINTS TO THE PATS….that incredible Denver Defense (you know, the one that Tebow haters say won all those games) looked pathetic. Granted, Tebow and the offense BOTH could have had a better day but the Patriot offense WON that game. Next time someone decides to print garbage like this (even in an obscure blog/website like this) for God’s sake at least try to sound like you aren’t solely in for the clicks.

Joe, the biggest problem is that this isn’t a “rumor”, rather, it’s your opinion. The two are not the same.

  4. Reza Zia-Ahmadi says:

You’re partially correct. The Broncos were shopping a trade for Tebow (very quietly) during the NFL combine, a full two weeks before Manning was released by Indianapolis. I wouldn’t exactly call this a rumor since the Jacksonville Jaguars owner spilled the beans regarding the situation not long after the trade. As stupid as Elway looks, he’s actually quite a skillful politician and a very good liar. The fact is Elway has never reviewed Tebow as an NFL caliber quarterback. He said so himself in his very first interview after he was hired as the VP of Broncos, causing much fan backlash. He learned his lesson and tempered his words and even made false promises but never changed his opinion. To pin the loss versus New England on Tebow is laughable. The Broncos much ballyhooed defense gave up six touchdowns in the first half alone guaranteeing that they would be no second-half heroics by Tebow. The offense played so poorly that Tebow was running for his life in the backfield most of the time. Their performance was so poor that Orlando Franklin even apologize to the fans after the game. It appeared that the Broncos were throwing the game to make the previous games performance against the number one defense in the NFL look like a fluke.

  5. Ava Gibbons says:

Opinion or rumor matters not. Tebow’s wins last year were sure not because of his great QB mechanics or ability to quickly access a defense, make a proper read and get rid of the ball. His sloppy, inconsistant inaccuracies are even more prevalent in NY. If fans follow him because of faith and religion, so be it. He is not a good QB. Running back, sure thing. He’s built for it and would probably excel at the position. His presence in NY has brought nothing concrete to the team. He’s a huge distraction that has put even more pressure on Sanchez. Tebow is really enjoying all the attention and is not focussed on his job. He just can’t make a decision without calling a timeout to discuss with coaches. I haven’t seen any improvement and no ‘tebowing’ at all. No need to bring religion into pro football. It does nothing, proves nothing. It’s a private preference meant to share with others in the proper setting. Someday Tim will make a good preacher. Today faith won’t make him a superstar QB, no matter how much he prays. He just doesn’t have it. Elway saw it clearly, made the right move. Sooner or later Rex may wake up too. Jets don’t have time to develop another QB. Let Sanchez concentrate on his job. Let Tebow run.
