Even though DeSean Jackson has only been released by the Philadelphia Eagles for a few hours, the Kansas City Chiefs have already reportedly reached out to representatives for the young wide receiver.
The fate of Jackson seemed to be changing by the hour for the past few weeks. The Eagles first denied any plan to actively shop him around, but then said that they would listen to any offers for Jackson from interested teams. The former wide receiver for the Eagles reportedly recently told his teammates that he was going to stay in Philadelphia, and he even put out a tweet about talking to “Big” Chip Kelly that seems to have been deleted since his departure from the team.
This is now becoming a media circus, but fantasy football players need to concentrate and focus on what is important. Jackson has blazing speed and has proven that he can be a top performer for his fantasy football owners. He could have become a top-five wide receiver under Kelly in 2014, but it is now time to evaluate where the former Eagle can stay fantasy relevant.
I do like the idea of Jackson once again playing for Andy Reid. Being his coach for several years, Reid is obviously familiar with the strengths of his former player and would know how to utilize him. With that being said, Alex Smith is not the type of quarterback who can allow Jackson to have another top-10 performance in 2014.
Smith loves to throw dump-off passes to his running backs and he targets his tight ends early and often. The highest receiving totals for the Chiefs in 2013 was posted by Jamaal Charles with 693 yards, and tight ends Sean McGrath and Anthony Fasano combined for a total of 502 receiving yards.
Jackson would also have to split targets with Dwayne Bowe. His touchdown total and receiving yards would be at an all-time low with the Chiefs, and it would just be a matter of time before Jackson would voice his displeasure with his usage.
There are many scenarios that can still occur, but fantasy football players should avoid Jackson at all costs if he signs with Kansas City.
