Fantasy Football Week 5 Projection: Eric Decker

Eric Decker

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Eric Decker hasn’t been the player the New York Jets thought he would be when they signed him to a huge contract over the offseason. Although the play of Geno Smith at the quarterback position hasn’t been good, Decker hasn’t always been healthy, and that has hurt the receiving group as a whole. Because of hamstring injuries, the Jets have had to rely on the likes of Greg Salas and David Nelson.

After having an unbelievable season with Peyton Manning running the show in Denver, Decker cashed in at the opportunity to be the No. 1 wide receiver somewhere else. After signing with the Jets, everyone knew that he wouldn’t be quite the player he was with Manning, but many expected a ton of production. Through four games this season, Decker has caught just 14 passes for 204 receiving yards and two touchdowns. While those numbers aren’t bad, the thing that concerns me is that he is getting paid to produce more than that.

The Jets will travel west to the play the red-hot San Diego Chargers, a team that loves to score points. That being said, the Jets will have to keep up on offense, and that is where Decker can make some plays. The Chargers’ secondary is suspect to say the least, and Decker will have opportunities because offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg will give him a ton of looks. Don’t expect this production every week, Decker fantasy football owners, but he should be in for a huge good performance on Sunday.

Week 5 fantasy football projection: Eight catches for 73 yards and a touchdown.
