Fantasy Football Week 7 Start Or Sit: Toby Gerhart

In the offseason the Jacksonville Jaguars handed a pretty hefty contract to running back Toby Gerhart. The plan was for him to replace longtime running back Maurice Jones-Drew and be the Jaguars’ lead back. It had fantasy owners thinking he would be a steal in the early-middle rounds of a draft, but he has disappointed the Jaguars and any fantasy owners that put faith in him. Week 7 is no different, as Gerhart should not be started for your fantasy team.

The Jaguars have a decent matchup in Week 7, going up against a Cleveland Browns team that is surrendering the 10th most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks. Even with that matchup, Gerhart is not worth a start in fantasy this week.

Gerhart is dealing with a foot injury that he suffered Week 4 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He missed last week’s game against the Tennessee Titans, and his status for Week 7 is also in doubt. He has not yet practiced this week, and looks highly unlikely to suit up.

This leaves a three-man committee for the Jaguars to use that will be led by rookie Storm Johnson. Even if Gerhart is surprisingly able to suit up, he is an underwhelming option to start in fantasy.

Gerhart has been extremely disappointing in his first season in Jacksonville, proving ineffective as a starting running back much like he was more often than not when he was a member of the Minnesota Vikings backing up Adrian Peterson. His season high on the ground thus far is only 42 yards, and he has received double-digit carries only once since the opening week of the season.

Gerhart has been one of the most disappointing players in fantasy this season as he hasn’t lived up to expectations. Even in the biggest of pinches for fantasy owners Gerhart should not be started as he is more than likely not going to play, and if he does he will be a part of a RBBC.
