After last nights Angels loss by a score of 3-2 to the Cleveland Indians making it 5 losses in a row and a 6-14 start to the season, the Angels made a big move by releasing veteran DH/outfielder Bobby Abreu. The move is a big one as the team will still be paying the rest of the $9 million dollars that Abreu is owed for the 2012 season.

Bobby Abreu got off to a slow start to the season with only 5 hits in 24 at bats for a batting average of .208. With the signing of Albert Pujols, combined with a now healthy Kendrys Morales and the emergence of Mark Trumbo as one of the teams top power hitters it was becoming more and more apparent that there was less room for at bats for the veteran Abreu. No doubt the teams slow start played a part in this decision that something needed to be done to shake up this team while there is still time to turn things around.

To take his place in the line up the Angels called up one of the top ranked prospects in all of baseball in Mike Trout. After getting a small taste of Major League Baseball last season it appears that Trout will be given a chance to have a big role with the team. Trout is expected to play mostly in center field, a spot that Peter Bourjas has played most of the season. While great at defense Bourjas is off to a slow start to the season batting only .178 in his first 45 at bats.

Another area that the Angels have struggled in to start the season is in the lead off spot where the team is batting a combined .195. Trout has been hitting very well this season in triple A batting .403 in the first 20 games for Salt Lake. The Angels are hoping that adding Mike Trout to their line up will give the team the spark they need, and help bring the team out of the slump they got themselves into to start the season. It is yet to be seen if Trout will be inserted into the lead off role right away, but it is a spot he could end up in if another batter does not emerge as a better option.

One thing is for sure, and that is something needed to change. Hopefully the addition of a great player like Mike Trout is exactly what the Angels need to turn things around.

One Rant to “Angels release Bobby Abreu, call up Mike Trout”

Yeah like Bobby Abreu was the problem for the Angels. Slow start? Abreu only played in 8 games and still hit 3 doubles and knocked in 5 RBIs. The Angels were going to stick it to Abreu as soon as they found out that Morales was healthy enough to play. They should have traded him to the Yankees or Indians before the season instead of sabotaging a good player by keeping him and then releasing him like that.
