Toronto Blue Jays Call Up Ricky Romero

Ricky Romero

The Toronto Blue Jays have just announced that starting pitcher Josh Johnson will be placed on the 15-day DL with right triceps inflammation, which had him miss his last start against the New York Yankees. Ricky Romero has been called up and will be replacing Johnson for Friday’s start again the Seattle Mariners.

The main question is Romero ready to pitch in the big leagues again?

Romero only had one start in Single-A, but he pitched very well, going seven innings and allowing just a run on five hits and no walks, while striking out four. But, everyone remembers his horrific season last year and his Spring Training this year. Is one minor league start enough for Romero to get his mechanics back to where he wants them to be?

Romero will be matched up against Felix Hernandez in tomorrow’s game, but the good news is that Seattle has only scored 103 runs in 30 games so far this season.

Johnson’s season has been like every other starting pitcher for the Jays, mediocre at best with lots of room for improvement. In four starts, he has no wins and one loss with a 6.86 ERA, so maybe some time on the DL is exactly what he needs to get back to the way he pitched last year.

With the Jays sitting last place in the AL East, calling up Romero, who has a chip on his shoulder, could be exactly what they need. The way the starting pitching has been this year, it’s not a bad idea to spice things up and see what comes from it.
