UFC News: Chael Sonnen To Fight Forrest Griffin
Mark J. Rebilas-US PRESSWIRE

Big news in the UFC as of last night. Former middleweight contender Chael Sonnen is switching his focus to the light heavyweight division to take a run at the belt. It was announced that Sonnen will be fighting Forrest Griffin at UFC 155 in late December.

“I could go up to 205 and I could take Jon Jones’ belt the same as I could take his candy on Halloween – a little punk kid, I’d snatch it away all I want,” Sonnen said. “But there’s something to be said in sportsmanship for earning your shot. And on the 29th of December, I’m going to go through Forrest to do it.”

No surprise that Sonnen is already talking trash about the current champion at 205. It will be interesting to see how Jon Jones reacts to the trash talk, but I don’t it think it will bother him at all because this is what people expect out of Sonnen. Sonnen and Griffin have already fought previously, with Griffin submitting him via triangle choke in the first round. Although Griffin won the first fight, I find it highly unlikely that he will be able to defeat him again. Sonnen has progressed a lot since there first fight and is the much stronger fighter of the two.

To me this seems like a good idea for Sonnen to move up. I think a fight with Jon Jones would be a better match-up for him, I don’t think Jones has as good submissions as Anderson Silva and Sonnen should be able to take Jones down. You can’t look ahead too much because Griffin has shown that he has a good submission game and has submitted some of the UFC’s best. This should be an interesting move for Chael Sonnen and we will see how he does in his new weight class at UFC 155.
