The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had a surprisingly good start to the 2012 NFL season and even though they fizzled at the end of it, they had a better year than most expected. Their offense was explosive at times helping them stay in games but it was their defense that needed the most help, which is why with the 13th pick in the Rant Mock Draft I selected cornerback Desmond Trufant.
It’s been well chronicled the Bucs have been trying to trade for Darrelle Revis this offseason, and it would be a smart move to since their pass defense finished last in the league. I was working with the assumption that Tampa Bay won’t trade with the New York Jets and thus drafted the speedy, athletic corner out of Washington.
When I was on the clock cornerbacks Dee Milliner and Xavier Rhodes were off the board so even though I may have reached a little for Trufant I am still getting an excellent player. Trufant is a smooth, fluid corner who has the speed to match up with wide receivers and the aggressiveness to fight for the ball. He’s got good hips and can open up and change direction quickly. Trufant is also scheme diverse since he’s played in both man and zone coverage’s. Of course, like most young corners he needs to work on technique and get stronger at the next level, but he’s avery good prospect.
The fit with Trufant and the Bucs is a perfect one since they could use all the help they can get in the secondary. He would be an immediate starter and an upgrade for the Bucs pass defense.
