2013 NFL Draft: San Francisco 49ers Hope For Low Risk, High Reward With Marcus Lattimore

(Jeff Blake/USA Today Sports)

One of the biggest questions heading into the 2013 NFL Draft was whether or not a team would take a chance on South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore considering there was a time last year where nobody even knew if he would be able to play football again. Now, it looks like Lattimore’s dream about playing in the NFL has come true after he was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the fourth round.

The 49ers took Lattimore with the 131st overall pick and even though there’s no telling what to expect from the star running back–San Francisco hopes this turns out to be a pick that pays off down the road. There were high expectations for Lattimore last season with South Carolina, but his season came to a sudden end after he dislocated his right knee cap to go along with three torn ligaments in what may have been one of the most gruesome injuries suffered in college football.

This may be a questionable move considering how many different running backs San Francisco already has on their roster, but this seems like one of those moves in which  the 49ers are hoping for a steal down the road considering Lattimore could have been a first-round pick if it wasn’t for his injury. Either way, it’s stories like Lattimore’s that make the NFL draft fun to watch and let’s hope his rehab continues to go well over the next few months as he looks to take advantage of this opportunity with his new team.
