Baltimore Ravens Select DT Brandon Williams In 2013 NFL Draft

As a highly touted prospect by some scouts that would be an early to late second round draft pick, Brandon Williams slipped all the way to 94 for the Baltimore Ravens in the 2013 NFL Draft. It’s one of those picks that are once again high in value for the team. With Terrence Cody having a very disappointing season in 2012, whether it is because of injuries or other issues, this is a sign for him that if he does not improve, the writing is on the wall.

Williams is a massive defensive tackle that is 6-1 weighing 335 pounds and is known for his athletic ability. According to ESPN, during the draft process Williams was actually checked out as a guard at one point because of his quick feet. He showed the ability to get off on one blocks in college. It is very important to do so in the 3-4 defense that the Ravens use due to their multiple fronts. The Ravens are not a traditional 3-4 defense. Players have multiple jobs and Williams may very well fit that role.

Williams is not expected to start this season barring any injuries due to Haloti Ngata taking over the nose tackle spot after previously starting as a 3-4 defensive end for the majority of his career. Chris Canty and Marcus Spears were both brought in to take over both of the defensive end spots. With Williams drafted, there is currently a log jam along the defensive line. Cody may very well be fighting for his job in training camp.
