The Houston Texans have lost their last three games to the Baltimore Ravens, Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49rs in order. You could argue right now that those three teams are top-10 teams in the league.

But if the Texans plan on making it to the Super Bowl, they will most likely have to deal with quality teams like the three named above. The Texans have serious issues that need to be addressed.

Texans quarterback Matt Schaub looks like a mess. A complete mess. Schaub has thrown interceptions returned for touchdowns in each of the last four games, which is now an NFL record. Schaub’s confidence must be at an all-time low. But if he is really lacking in confidence, I don’t think much can be done at this point.

We saw Texans defensive end J.J. Watt as furious as someone can be when the Texans lost to the Seahawks in Week 4, and it is starting to seem like the defense can’t take this offense performing the way they are at this point.

Schaub is obviously the Texans’ best option at quarterback and people need to accept that. I have been on record saying that Schaub has enough talent to help lead the Texans to the Super Bowl, but if the players in the Texans’ locker room have checked out on him, then their season is pretty much done.

The Texans are not lacking from a physical standpoint. It really is the mental state of the team that is in question. Elite teams have had bad stretches similar to one the Texans have right now. They managed to get out of it. The Texans would like to think of themselves as an elite team, so they better at least act like one.

Being an elite team starts with mental toughness. But if the starting quarterback is ready to check out, then the Texans’ defense has to be the calling card through, and through. I have seen the Ravens have their issues at quarterback in the early 2000′s, and the defense bailed the offense out. I’m sure newly-acquired Texan Ed Reed knows all about that.

Reed has the pedigree to step into this situation, and tell every member on the Texans to forget about the last three weeks because it happens. Reed is one player on the Texans who I believe can realistically fix the Texans’ issues from a mental standpoint because he has been through it. The Texans can sink or swim, at this point.
