The New York Jets are sitting at 3-1, about to face one of the hottest teams in the NFL tomorrow, the San Diego Chargers.
While it does not look good for New York, especially when the likes of Peyton Manning and Tom Brady are future opponents. You would think, with this record and strength of schedule, statistics would not be working out to their favor.
In reality, statistics seem to indicate that New York should not be 1-3, they should be 2-2 at least. New York is 11th overall in the league in overall offense, third in the league in total defense, second in the league in rushing, first against the rush, 11th against the pass, and 21st in passing. Now, putting aside this last statistic, as we are aware of Geno Smith‘s struggles, New York is in the better half of the league in all the main team statistics, in fact, among the top five in three of them. New York ranks better in five out of the six of these statistical categories than both the New York Giants and the New England Patriots, yet both of these teams are 2-2 and sitting better than the Jets.
So what’s missing? Is there a missing link? Yes, yes there is. Lack of a secondary quite frankly, even though they rank in the better half of the league, and an offensive weapon, even though they are better half in the league. Sure, Smith has had his struggles, but it’s just a player or two away from this team winning a few more games. Not to mention, they have played some pretty tough teams.
Who knows where New York will stand in the next couple weeks, but as a coach, I wouldn’t complain too much about where my team is ranking as far as statistics. But the 1-3 record? Yeah, I wouldn’t be too happy.
