It was previously thought that Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles would be out for the season after injuring his left collarbone, but after a follow-up CT scan that took place on Saturday, he is expected to return in 2-4 weeks.
However, this news shouldn’t change anything they’re doing, and that includes keeping Mark Sanchez as their starting quarterback. There’s no point in putting Foles back under center when Sanchez has actually outperformed him during his relief duty this season.
In the first nine games of the season, Foles completed 59.8 percent of his passes while throwing 13 touchdowns compared to 10 interceptions. Last season, he was noted for turning the ball over very little, throwing only two interceptions compared to 27 touchdowns. That efficiency has been absent in 2014, with Foles throwing almost as many picks as touchdowns.
Sanchez, on the other hand, has completed 63.4 percent of his passes in five games while tossing eight touchdowns and six interceptions. Clearly, it’s not like Sanchez has just been blowing opposing teams away, but he has performed as well or better than Foles. Sanchez may have more to play for as well. As his career spiraled downward for the New York Jets, he became a running punchline. Now, he has the chance to prove he can still play the quarterback position. He’s done that so far and there’s no point in replacing him now.
Even though Foles seems to be on track to return sooner than previously thought, this shouldn’t change anything for the Eagles. Sanchez is the starter, and it should remain that way even when Foles returns. Some people forget that Sanchez helped lead the Jets to the AFC Championship game in his first two seasons in the NFL.
With all the offensive talent the Eagles have at their disposal, there’s no reason to believe he can’t lead them as far, or farther than he led the Jets at the beginning of his career.
