Notre Dame’s Irish Cleats Bring Tradition Alive in Dublin
The University Notre Dame is a one of the most storied college football programs in the country. Their traditional ways hold no bounds when it comes to uniforms… until now. When the Fighting Irish take on Navy on September 1st, they will be rocking these fancy new cleats, which are based off of Ireland’s national flag.
As a Notre Dame fan, I don’t know how I feel about these cleats, but I also don’t know how much I care about Notre Dame anymore. I may be one of the few people that actually liked the uniforms they wore against Michigan last year. The helmets with the big shamrock were pretty awesome as were the uniforms they wore. For the most part, I just enjoyed the fact that Notre Dame did something new, instead of valuing their “tradition”.
Look, it’s 2012, your football program has been irrelevant for the better part of almost two decades, let’s mix it up! I’m going to assume there will be a uniform change with these cleats as well, because other wise it’s going to match about as well as dress pants and flip-flops.
The game will be held at 2:00 PM local time, which means the Irish will start their season even before College Gameday airs in the States at 9:00 AM EST. It should be an interesting experiment for both teams involved. I’m just hoping the travel doesn’t affect the teams negatively. I’m also hoping Notre Dame keeps Tommy Rees away from the authentic Irish bars if he is still with the team. Actually, on second thought, that might be a good thing since Tommy Rees is the worst quarterback since the quarterback position existed.
To close, I wonder what time my insane friends will want to pre-game for a 9:00 AM kickoff. If I know them like I think I do, they probably won’t even want to go to sleep.
