Recruiting: Max Browne, Top HS QB, To Choose Between USC and OU
Gary A. Vasquez-US PRESSWIRE

Max Browne is ready to make an offensive coordinator extremely happy on Wednesday. The nation’s top prep quarterback plans to commit and Southern California, Oklahoma and to a lesser extent, Alabama and Washington are still alive in the pursuit.

Ranked as the fifth prospect overall by 247Sports, Browne tossed for more than 4,000 yards and 45 touchdowns as a junior. His Washington high school, Skyline, also enters 2012 as the defending state champs.

Prognosticators are relatively clear across the board that Browne is headed for Los Angeles. He just finished a three-day trip to the USC campus and declared his intention to announce upon arriving home.

Bob Stoops and the Sooners will likely finish second in the race but as is the case in recruiting, that’s on par with last.

Should Browne follow through with a pledge to the Trojans, he’ll face a crowded depth chart in 2013.

Matt Barkley‘s surprising return for his senior year makes for a fascinating quarterback battle in Los Angeles next spring, summer and fall.

Jesse Scroggins, Cody Kessler and Max Wittek figure to join the true freshman Browne in an embarrassment of signal-caller riches for Lane Kiffin.

Scroggins, as of a couple of months ago, had some academic issues and may fall behind the duo of redshirt freshmen in the fight for the backup job. Both Kessler and Wittek impressed during a USC scrimmage over the weekend. Thus, it’s a possibility that if Scroggins is lost to attrition, Kessler and Wittek could remain through spring practice 2013 before either decides to transfer.

Of course, Barkley’s experience represents the exception that Browne hopes to emulate. He arrived at USC with the hype but showcased enough productivity to get then-coach Pete Carroll to tab him the starter in the season opener, a first for a Trojans’ true freshman.

The initial step in mirroring Barkley’s path is to commit to Southern Cal tomorrow. Then sign, then report early or during the summer and finally, perform for Lane Kiffin.

But this is recruiting, it wouldn’t be fun if you didn’t see the talent and start making assumptions a year before the prospect sets foot on campus.
