Head coach Andy Reid used the down time he had from the Eagles bye week by taking a good hard look in the mirror.  Not just for himself, but for his entire coaching staff.  This may have proven to be the wisest decision coach Reid has made in awhile.

As I have stated many times before, Andy Reid is a smart guy.  He knew their was a glaring problem, he just could not put his finger on it.  Sometimes you are so close to everything and involved in every aspect, that the obvious is far from readily apparent.

Andy Reid spent three days with his staff evaluating themselves and their own team.  A-HAH!!!  The all-pro personnel they acquired in the off-season were just that:  still all-pro talent.  Reid’s conclusion was that his staff needed to coach to his players strengths.  That included everybody.

Sunday night’s match-up with the Dallas Cowboys was coaching perfection.  For the offense, Reid decided to use LeSean McCoy’s cutback ability and run blocking schemes to utilize this strength.  Traps and stretch draw plays had the offensive line blocking traditionally with a backside flow that opened up the cutbacks.  LeSean was up for the challenge and Reid rewarded him with a career high 30 carries.

Reid also decided to use the middle of the field in the passing game by getting Brent Celek involved for the second straight game.  I have been writing about this for awhile.  Celek chipped effectively and presented himself as a large target for the smallish Michael Vick.  It was a perfect scheme.  The bubble screen was used as well, with Jason Peters laying the smack-down on would be defenders.

Defensively, the Eagles strategy was even more impressive.  They forgot the zone scheme and went man to man.  They were more aggressive, especially with run blitzes.  The smartest strategy was to put Nnamdi Asomugha all over the field.  He was a man to man roamer who matched up with Romo’s best passing option depending on the Cowboy’s offensive look.  Brilliant.

This game should be a huge building block in the Eagles development.  From now on, the Birds should play as an elite team.  As I have been writing for some time, they have always had the personnel.  It was up to the coaches to get the most out of them.
