John David Mercer - US PRESSWIRE

Multiple sources have indicated that the Philadelphia Phillies tried to lure left-handed relief pitcher Billy Wagner out of retirement before inking Jonathan Papelbon to a four-year, $50 million contract.

Wagner enjoyed a phenomenal season with the Atlanta Braves in 2010, posting a career-best 1.43 ERA with 37 saves in 69 innings pitched before calling it quits after 16 years in the majors. Wagner had previously been on the Phillies from 2004-2005, saving 59 games with a 1.86 ERA during that span.

Wagner said he is now happily retired and working as a JV baseball coach. His agent said other teams have contacted Wagner in an attempt to get him to come back to the game, but Wagner says he is not interested.
