Howard Smith - US PRESSWIRE

Few professional athletes in recent years have had the hype surrounding them as Bryce Harper has for the Washington Nationals. Harper is just a 19-year old kid but he is batting in the third spot for the NL East leading Nationals, and he’s hitting at a .385 clip in the major leagues.

Harper was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 MLB amateur draft and he quickly shot through the minor league system. Harper was called up to the major leagues several days ago when third baseman Ryan Zimmerman was placed on the 15-day DL, and Harper has responded exceptionally. He was 1-for-3 with a double, RBI, and a sacrifice fly in his first big league game, and recently went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles.

Harper has also played well defensively in left field, as he has excellent range to go with a strong throwing arm. Harper will torment the Phillies for the next decade or more, or until he hits free agency and the Nationals can no longer afford him. Harper is a five-tool prospect, and he’s probably a better player at the age of 19 than Ken Griffey, Jr., Alex Rodriguez, or any ballplayer to have ever lived.

Harper will be facing Kyle Kendrick tonight, as the Philadelphia Phillies square off against the Nationals in a three-game series. Harper will face Vance Worley on Saturday, and he will really be tested when he faces Cole Hamels on Sunday, a tough left-hander who has a World Series MVP award.
