WWE's Top 5 Animal Sidekicks

There have been many weird, wacky and downright odd sidekicks in pro wrestling over the years. Many of them have been animals, and some of them have become the most lasting memories of WWE superstars. Some of those are on this list.

5 - Matilda (The British Bulldogs)

Two of the most talented and toughest wrestlers around, Davey Boy Smith and The Dynamite Kid, had a handler bring the cute little bulldog Matilda with them to the ring for a period of time. She was notably stolen, or attempted to be stolen, a number of times, but is likely remembered mostly due to how incredibly unintimidating she was.

4 - Fifi (Rene Dupree)

"He's a Frenchman. It's the French Tickler." A weekly phrase used by Tazz on commentary during the year of 2003 for the SmackDown brand. Rene Dupree toted around his French poodle Fifi every week, and this dog was so glamorous that some weeks, she would have such a crazy makeover that not only was she a different color, but she would have different fur and even be a different size. That is indeed French magic.

3 - Frankie (Koko B. Ware)

One of the most iconic figures from the WWF in the 80s into the early 1990s was Koko B, Ware's colorful macaw, Frankie. Ware was indeed known as the Birdman and his colorful outfits and antics were what made him a popular star, but in the end it was Frankie who captured the hearts of all.

2 - Swagger Soaring Eagle (Jack Swagger)

There's no way for someone to put together a list like this and not rank the far too short-lived Swagger Soaring Eagle near the top. Jack Swagger needed something new and different to give him a spark, and WWE decided that the best way to make people care about him would be to saddle him with a guy in an eagle suit. Well gosh darn if it didn't win me over -- my son still asks about where the eagle is almost every time Swagger is on-screen. Come back Swagger Soaring Eagle -- we miss you.

1 - Damien (Jake “The Snake” Roberts)

All joking aside -- I could have padded this list with El Torito, Boogeyman's worms or other inconsequential mascots -- the No. 1 animal sidekick in the history of professional wrestling is easily Jake Roberts' beloved snake, Damien. The fans loved the snake and Jake's opponents generally cowered in fear. Bring up "Jake The Snake" to a group of non-wrestling fans and I bet nearly as many of them would recognize that name as they would Hulk Hogan. Damien was big business for Jake Roberts and the WWF.
