New Orleans Saints RB Reggie Bush suffered a broken leg last night against the San Francisco 49er’s. The Saints utility running back suffered the injury while trying to recover a muffed punt late in the game. He tried to walk off the field under his own power but eventually had to be assisted off the field. The injury is being reported as a broken right fibula.

Bush provides the New Orleans Saints team with a great deal of versatility out of the backfield along with returning kicks, his loss will be difficult to replace for the Saints. The loss of Bush leaves Pierre Thomas as the primary back for the Saints. Thomas is an effective runner when healthy but has a history of missing a few games a year with injury issues. Backing up Thomas is DeShawn Winn and Chris Ivory. Ivory is currently dealing with a knee injury suffered in the final preseason game of the year against the Tennessee Titans.

Reggie Bush fills a very versatile role for the Saints and his loss, for however many weeks it will be, will be very difficult to overcome. This is a team which brought in some veteran running backs in the preseason to work out, and one has to wonder if they now might be in the market for someone like a Marshawn Lynch from the Buffalo Bills. Marshawn Lynch has been linked to more trade rumors than Albert Haynesworth of the Washington Redskins, and however much the Buffalo Bills try to deny they want to trade the running back, you have to think that if the right deal came along, the Bills would have to be tempted to trade him with Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller in the backfield.

Do the New Orleans Saints really want to try to defend their Super Bowl Championship with only Pierre Thomas in the backfield as an experienced runner? Drew Brees is a lights out quarterback, but if Thomas were to miss some games, which is inevitable, wouldn’t the Saints want a veteran in the backfield?
