Will the Buffalo Bills trade RB Marshawn Lynch before the October 19th trade deadline? Marshawn Lynch’s name has been linked to ever trade rumor involving a running back since the Buffalo Bills used a first round pick to select C.J.Spiller in April. Lynch is in the middle of a crowded backfield in Buffalo, along with Spiller, Buffalo has Fred Jackson in the mix who rushed for over 1,000 yards last season. There are not enough carries to go around to get everyone involved in the running game. In a case like yesterday’s waxing of the Buffalo Bills by the New York Jets, Lynch only carried the ball 4 times while QB Ryan Fitzpatrick led the Bills offense in rushing.

Let’s face it, the Buffalo Bills are not going to challenge for the AFC East title this year, and most likely not next year either. They have problems nearly everywhere you look. The offensive line is poor. The wide reciving corps needs help. The quarterback position is not settled. The run defense is lousy. So what is the benefit of the Buffalo Bills keeping three running backs, when Buffalo is seemingly always playing from behind and having to put the ball in the air?

Lynch, 24, is in the fourth year of a six year contract worth nearly 19 million dollars, which makes him an attractive player to be dealt. With a team with as many issues as the Bills have, it would make sense for Buffalo to move the fourth year player and get a draft pick in exchange. But where would he go?

The most logical destination is the Green Bay Packers. The Packers are in serious need of a running back and Lynch’s running ability coupled with his pass catching skills would make him a perfect fit. Another team in serious need of a running back is the Denver Broncos. The Broncos are dead last in the NFL for rushing yardage, averaging 55 yards per game. Sunday, Kyle Orton led the Broncos in rushing with 11 yards against the Tennessee Titans. Denver has already traded for one running back this season, former New England Patriots RB Laurence Maroney, so a trip to Denver for Lynch seems unreasonable.

Another possible destination is the Washington Redskins. Veteran RB Clinton Portis suffered a groin injury yesterday against the Philadelphia Eagles and the Redskins are extremely thin at running back.

I realize that player trades at the NFL trade deadline are rare, last year Larry Johnson was sent packing from Kansas City to Cincinnati after some bizarre behavior, but trading Marshawn Lynch only makes sense for the Buffalo Bills. The team has too many holes to fill and what better way to address the holes than through the draft. Trading Lynch would allow the Bills to acquire more selections in next year’s draft.
