After earning the first start of his professional career, rookie quarterback Russell Wilson delivered a solid performance in the Seattle Seahawks 44-14 win over the Kansas City Chiefs improving to 3-0 in the preseason.
The offense started out slow in the first quarter only coming up with two field goals to take an early lead. After ending a drive with another field goal in the second quarter, Wilson connected with tight end Kellen Winslow for a 21-yard touchdown pass making it 16-0.
A few drives later, Wilson connected for his second touchdown pass of the game, an 11-yard pass to wideout Charly Martin.
Wilson finned the night completing 13-of-19 passing for 185-yards and two touchdowns with zero interceptions. Along with his arm, Wilson had two rushing attempts totaling 58-yards on the night.
The rookie quarterback proved he can move the ball with the first unit and is one step closer to taking the starting role from free agent signing Matt Flynn. Flynn struggled to move the ball in the last two starts he had for the Seahawks but Wilson handled the job well against Kansas City.
Tight End Anthony McCoy led the Seahawks in receiving with 47-yards on 2 receptions while wide receiver Terrell Owens made an appearance coming up with 41-yards on the night. Winslow finished the night with 23-yards and one touchdown while Braylon Edwards came up with one acrobatic catch for 32-yards.
Just when it seemed like Edwards was winning the battle of which veteran receiver should stay on the roster, Owens delivers on the night. Edwards still has the upper hand in this preseason but Owens cannot be counted out, not yet.
Wilson was not the only rookie to perform against the Chiefs Friday night. Rookie running back Robert Turbin ran for 93-yards on 14 carries including a 25-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter.
Turbin demonstrated that he can deliver a solid performance in games but the question is if he can do it during a game that matters. If the rookie is able to continually put up numbers in the regular season, he can be extremely beneficial to the Seahawks as a reliever late in games.
As the offense unloaded on the Chiefs, defense and special teams made an impact in the game as well when the secondary of Seattle came up with another interception adding to the total of five in the preseason. Safety Earl Thomas intercepted a pass from Kansas City quarterback Matt Cassell and scored on a 75-yard return, the Seahawks second defensive score this preseason.
As for special teams, wide receiver Golden Tate returned a 92-yard punt late in the third quarter for Seattle’s finally score of the night.
The Seahawks have won all three of their preseason games with relative ease. All aspects of the team were performing on a high level in this last game but it all means nothing if they cannot do this during the regular season. Seattle’s defense has to continue to come up with turnovers while the young quarterbacks find a way to move the ball on offense. The preseason can be misleading but if the Seahawks bring these performances into the regular season, a run can be made against the division favorite San Francisco 49ers.
