UEFA Champions League: After 2-1 FA Cup Win vs Liverpool, Can Chelsea Close The Deal vs Bayern Munich?

LONDON — It appears that Chelsea’s recent string of strong form under caretaker manager Robert Di Matteo will continue right until the end.

Thanks to another strong game by Ivorian striker, Didier Drogba, Chelsea would win their fourth FA Cup in six years, with a 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Wembley Stadium in London.

For the Blues, fresh off a shocking 3-2 aggregate victory over depending European champion, F.C. Barcelona, will now face Bundesliga side, Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League final on Munich’s own pitch.

With the way that Chelsea has played in impressive Champions League wins over Barcelona, SSC Napoli and Leverkusen, it wouldn’t be much of a surprise to Blues supporters worldwide if they hoist the Champions League trophy and secure their first ever European title.

Since taking over for manager Andres Villa-Boas two months, Di Matteo has guided Chelsea to the cusp of European glory—and thanks to the return of Drogba—the Blues are two weeks away from becoming the first English club since Manchester United to pull of the FA Cup-Champions league double.

Manchester United would with the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League double in 1999.

This will be Chelsea’s second UEFA Champions League final.  The Blues would lose 6-5 on penalty kicks to Manchester United, after a 1-1 tie in regulation.

While the opponent is different this time in Bayern Munich, and not Manchester united, Chelsea appears to have all the momentum in the world going for them in the form of confidence, a more defensive-minded approach on the pitch and timely scoring from Drogba, Kalou and Frank Lampard.

Even though they will be without the services of captain John Terry, Branislav Ivanovic, Raul Meireles and Ramires due to an accumulation of yellow cards during Chelsea’s win at Camp Nou, the way the Blues are playing, they may not need them.
