UNC Adds ESPN Analyst Hubert Davis to Staff

Former North Carolina assistant Jerod Haase left the Tar Heels in April to pursue the head coaching vacancy at UAB.

The move left Roy Williams and UNC in search of a new assistant for the 2012-13 season. They have finally found their newest staff member, appointing ex-ESPN analyst Hubert Davis to the position.

Davis, who was labeled by Williams as the Tar Heels’ “first option” is thrilled to have Davis joining the staff.

The former North Carolina player has spent the past seven seasons working as an ESPN college basketball analyst, most notably taking part in the network’s College GameDay segment during the season.

Williams, who helped recruit Davis to UNC in the 1988, began his own collegiate coaching career in Chapel Hill before taking the head job at Kansas. Williams returned to UNC in 2003 and has guided the Tar Heels’ program ever since.

“Hubert has always been on my mind in case a spot did come open. I didn’t know if I could get him to come back, but I knew I wanted him to be the first option. Coaching is about teaching, relationships and passion and I feel Hubert is the perfect choice.”

There was no doubt that the open vacancy on the North Carolina staff was set to be filled by an individual with ties to the program, and in fact, 14 former players contacted Williams about the position during the search.

Davis was selected 20th overall in the 1992 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks. He concluded his 12-year collegiate career with the New Jersey Nets in 2004.
