Texas Longhorn Football Stars Arrested in Austin

Most college football fans just want to get through an off-season without hearing about players from their teams getting into trouble with the law. Unfortunately for The University of Texas, three of their star football players were arrested early Monday morning in an incident that should not have been a big deal, but for whatever reason, common sense did not prevail.

Texas seniors Alex Okafor, Kenny Vaccaro and  Barrett Matthews, along with former Longhorn, Eryon Barnett, were arrested at 1:30 this morning at an Austin pizza joint  located on the city’s renown Sixth Street after police were called on a complaint that the Longhorns were causing “a disturbance.” Then then failed to leave when asked to do so by management.

Records from the Austin Police department show that all four were charged with ”failure to obey a lawful order,” a Class C misdemeanor. Former Horn, Barnett, was also charged with “failing to identify,” refusing to identify himself when asked to do so by the authorities.

Okafor and Vaccaro are two of the Horns defensive standouts. Vaccaro decided to return to school for his senior season, despite the fact that many believed he could have gone late in the first round of this year’s NFL Draft. Okafor is also projected to go in the first round of next years draft as well. Matthews made some noise at tight end last season and is expected to be a big offensive contributer this coming year.

These players, especially as seniors and team leaders, have to understand that they are public figures and they are representatives of The University of Texas. And though it doesn’t appear that these charges are serious, in fact, they are pretty mild considering many of the off-season stories we hear from all over, but head-coach Mack Brown has a history of taking even small infractions seriously.

These guys have to be smarter than that.
